These old gravel workings form an oasis for wildlife in the midst of encroaching industrial, housing and roadway development. Gravel extraction ceased in 1951, and thereafter the old workings have attracted an increasing variety of birds, insects, and vegetation; and provided a much needed refuge for a colony of the nationally rare water vole.
