Ruxley is home to 169 species of birds, including a significant number of endangered, rare and protected species. Three of six of the red listed species present at Ruxley Gravel Pits

Within the UK there are significant concerns over the natural bird population, some 40 birds have been identified as being globally endangered, and a further 121 breeds have been deemed to be in danger within Europe. A large number of the species covered by the report visit and breed at Ruxley Gravel Pits primarily because the site is itself left undisturbed despite being in the middle of a heavily developed area.
